Details on the news that a mega-retailer will shutter its health centers

Walmart Health will close all 51 of its health centers across five states and shut down its Walmart Health Virtual Care services, according to a press release issued by Walmart.

“The decision to close all 51 health centers across five states and shut down the virtual care offering was not easy. We understand this change affects lives – the patients who receive care, the associates and providers who deliver care and the communities who supported us along the way. This is a difficult decision, and like others, the challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs create a lack of profitability that make the care business unsustainable for us at this time,” Walmart stated in the press release.

Walmart’s more than 3,000 vision centers will not be affected by the closure. In fact, the company noted the great success of its optical business, along with its virtual try-on capabilities.

“Our optical business, which is growing and evolving to serve customers how and when they want, recently expanded with more than 200 Vision Centers brought under Walmart ownership. We also launched a suite of optical tools, including virtual try-on capabilities that make getting a pair of glasses even easier,” the press release stated.
