How Much Do You Pay Your Optician?

The average compensation reported for all opticians/dispensers responding to Jobson Optical Research’s and Local Eye Site’s ECP Compensation Study was $45,512. The median compensation for the same group was $42,000. The Northeast Census Regions had the highest average compensation at $52,705 and the Midwest the lowest at $39,520. The South came in at $47,731 and the West at $43,277.

There are multiple factors involved in setting a pay scale for an optician such as experience, previous wage and how many people are applying for the same job. The single most important factor for us is: can they complete the treatment plan with the patient? Sitting across from the optician in the job interview, ask yourself this simple question: Would I buy from them? The answer gives insight into what is going to happen in your optical.

Once on the job, make sure you measure the optician’s performance. Areas to track are:
• Total optical revenue
• Optical revenue-per-patient
• Average optical sale
• Number of second pair sales
• Number of sunglass sales

An optician meeting and exceeding the goals set for the above areas is worth an excellent wage. Re-evaluate anyone not performing at expected levels. Create your ideal staff while it’s still an employer’s market.
