In this survey, “sports sunglasses” were defined as sunglasses designed specifically for outdoor sports and other physical activities, and that have special features such as scratch resistance and hydrophobic coating, among other features.
The report’s findings show that consumers are highly satisfied with the sports sunglasses they currently own and have a clear preference for specific features. Even so, it was found that overall sports sunglass ownership is low.
3 Key Takeaways from the Report
- About one-in-10 U.S. consumers own sport sunglasses. Among those who own sports sunglasses, men are three times more likely to own them compared to women.
- Consumers are typically satisfied with sport sunglasses that they own. Among them, about 86 percent are satisfied with their purchase, with features like UV protection, style, fit and polarized lenses driving customer satisfaction.
- Consumers who own sport sunglasses see the value in them, as they frequently use them during outdoor sports activities (89 percent). Sport sunglasses are used most of the time for hiking (40 percent), running (35 percent), biking (35 percent) and fishing (35 percent).
It is apparent that while sport sunglasses have a loyal user base, there’s some opportunity to expand this market by promoting some of the features that current owners find most appealing and reaching out to audiences that might use their regular sunglasses for sports activities.
