Alcon announced the introduction of water-gradient technology that is employed in a new daily replacement contact lens scheduled to be available in the US in late 2013. “This represents a new era in contact lenses,” says Rick Weisbarth, OD, FAAO, Alcon’s Vice President of Professional Affairs, who presented the innovation at SECO in Atlanta.
Water-gradient technology allows for a gradual transition from 33 percent water at the core of the lens to 80 percent water at the lens surface, where it mimics the water content of the cornea. This provides an ideal harmony between surface and core lens properties with the highest surface lubricity and highest breathability of any daily replacement contact lens, according to Alcon data.
The result is a lens that delivers exceptional comfort lasting throughout the day and minimizes the leading reason for contact lens dropouts: discomfort.
