ZEISS Launches New DuraVision AR Options

June 24, 2015

ZEISS has launched the first three AR treatments in its DuraVision line: DuraVision Platinum, DuraVision BlueProtect and DuraVision Silver.

“Consumers choose anti-reflective coatings because they want the clearest possible vision,” says Claude Labeeuw, vice-president of marketing for Carl Zeiss Vision U.S. “Of course, this means minimizing lens reflections, but that is just one factor. A lens won’t offer the best possible clarity if it is scratched, dirty or smudged. To offer true clarity, lenses must combine great anti-reflective properties with superior scratch resistance and easy cleaning.”

Zeiss says the new flagship treatment, ZEISS DuraVision Platinum, “offers an unprecedented level of clarity through outstanding performance” in three key areas:

•    Anti-reflection. ZEISS DuraVision Platinum’s residual reflectance is just 0.8 percent, “lower than any other leading AR.”

•    Toughness. ZEISS DuraVision Platinum’s new foundation layer makes lenses more scratch-resistant than crown glass, so they will maintain clarity and a pristine appearance in the face of everyday wear and tear.

•    Easy cleaning. The combination of and advanced water- and oil-repelling topcoat and a patented anti-static layer makes lenses with ZEISS DuraVision Platinum both dirt-resistant and easy to clean.

“We are confident that ZEISS DuraVision Platinum offers the best combination of anti-reflection, toughness and ease of use in the market today,” says Labeeuw.

ZEISS says its DuraVision BlueProtect extends the capability of AR coatings by offering significant protection against high-energy blue light, which has been linked to retinal damage and age-related macular degeneration. Use of digital screens and energy-saving light bulbs at night is also believed to suppress the secretion of melatonin into the bloodstream, which can lead to sleep disorders.

ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect, the company says, significantly reduces harmful blue light (wavelengths shorter than 450nm) while allowing nearly all beneficial light (470nm and above) to pass through. Since fluorescent and LED  light bulbs have peak intensities below 450, it also reduces blue light exposure at night.  ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect has the same scratch resistance and cleanability as ZEISS DuraVision Platinum. “BlueProtect is the perfect match for the new ZEISS Progressive Precision line and ZEISS Digital Lens, ” says Labeeuw. “Together they offer a comprehensive solution to the vision problems associated with digital devices.”

“2015 marks the 80th anniversary of the AR coating, which was invented by a ZEISS researcher in 1935,” says Uli Krauss, president and CEO of Carl Zeiss Vision U.S.  “We are celebrating this anniversary in the best possible way — with a new family of coatings that offer superior performance for consumers and a growth opportunity for eyecare professionals.”
