EXPLORE PRACTICE MODES. Career symposiums hosted by optometry schools give students a chance to hear from ODs in corporate and private practice, as well as from ODs in industry, hospital and academic settings.

INTERACT. Students can hone their presentation skills with potential employers. Learn to succinctly present your best attributes, then ask questions to see if the employment situation is right for you.

HIRE TO UPGRADE YOUR SERVICES. Today’s students are trained to perform a range of therapeutics and diagnostics, and most are social-media savvy, to boot. adding such skills to an existing practice can greatly expand the services you provide.

GET IN-DEPTH PRODUCT LOOK. Familiarize yourself with optical products by interacting with manufacturers. Many offer student trips to their manufacturing plant to see how contact lenses are made or how pharmaceutical research is done.

FIND YOUR NICHE. Expand your expectations of where opportunity may take you in your career. Clinical research can lead to a career at a major optical manufacturer. A love for sharing can lead to an academic post.

ANTICIPATE FUTURE WORK LIFE. Hear potential employers explain what a typical work life would be like as their employee, and start your career in an environment that meets the goals you set for yourself.
