As an optometrist, I’ve always believed in the importance of evolving our practices to meet the needs of our patients. Myopia management offers a unique opportunity to grow beyond the bounds of conventional optometry thinking.

The most compelling reason to embrace myopia management is its potential to significantly impact children’s future eyesight development. By actively managing myopia, we can reduce the risk of severe visual impairment and associated comorbidities, which has far-reaching implications for both the individual and the health care system.

Before you can do any of this, though, you need the right support to build the myopia services your patients need. I was fortunate to find that the organization my practice joined, AEG Vision (AEG), provided just what we needed to provide a high level of myopia management.

The Financial Benefits of Myopia Management

Beyond the ethical imperative, myopia management also sharpens our clinical skills. It allows us to treat and manage scenarios that were previously only observed, enhancing our critical thinking and decision-making abilities. From a financial perspective, integrating myopia management into our practices can serve as a strong foundation for growth and sustainability.

AEG Vision’s Proactive Approach

When I began my journey with AEG, our practice operated somewhat independently, with limited support for learning new skills. However, over the past five years, I’ve witnessed a remarkable transformation in AEG’s approach. They are now proactive in their myopia management offerings, creating clinical focus groups, guidebooks and online learning platforms. AEG recognizes the importance of myopia management and is committed to supporting doctors who want to expand their knowledge and skills.

Strengthening In-Office Protocols

Prior to AEG’s acquisition, my office already offered extensive myopia management services. However, since joining AEG, we’ve solidified our in-office protocols and administrative processes for the myopia management program. AEG has also provided us with state-of-the-art tools, such as an axial length measuring device, enabling us to treat our patients more effectively.

Collaborative Learning Through Clinical Focus Groups

One of the most valuable aspects of being part of AEG is the opportunity to participate in clinical focus groups led by myopia management experts. These sessions foster open dialogue and collaboration, allowing us to learn from one another. With a vast network of providers, it’s common to connect with other doctors to discuss clinical cases and share insights. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking at a continuing education dinner hosted by AEG, where I introduced myopia control topics to fellow practitioners in our region.

Sharing Best Practices Across AEG

Collaboration with other practices within AEG’s network has been instrumental in refining our administrative approaches. As a seasoned myopia management office, we’ve shared our experiences with support staff from various locations, learning from their successes as well. Topics such as billing cycles, accounting practices and individualized treatment program structures have been particularly beneficial.

Effective Communication with Patients and Families

Our clinical focus groups also emphasize the importance of communication with patients and their families. We’ve discovered that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach; some practitioners adopt a scientific perspective, while others focus on lifestyle or emotional aspects. Understanding the goals of patients and their families is crucial for effective myopia management.

Marketing Our Services

In our focus groups, we also discuss effective marketing strategies for myopia management services. Common topics include hosting in-office educational events, crafting referral letters and connecting with parent groups through our patients. These initiatives help raise awareness and promote our services within the community.

AEG’s Extensive Network of Practitioners

Being part of AEG connects us to thousands of doctors nationwide. This diverse community includes leading experts, seasoned providers and newcomers alike. The network ensures that we have access to cutting-edge practices and approaches. Additionally, AEG is actively creating professionally curated content that serves as a valuable resource for all practitioners interested in myopia management.

Looking Ahead

As I look to the future, my goal is to provide state-of-the-art myopia control and improve patient treatment outcomes through continuing education and the right tools. I am confident that AEG will support us in obtaining the necessary funding for education and resources. Their commitment to our success aligns with our desire to provide the best care for our patients. Ultimately, I hope AEG will implement more myopia control practices across the country, helping to change the trajectory of global myopia.

Myopia management is not just a service; it’s a commitment to the future of our patients and the health care system. By embracing this approach, we can make a significant difference in the lives of children and their families. Together with AEG, we are paving the way for a brighter future in optometry.
