Study connects migraines with aura to middle-age stroke risk
June 1, 2026
A longitudinal study of 11,400 adults found migraine with aura linked to a 73% higher ischemic stroke risk, while migraine without aura showed no increased risk. These auras can include visual or sensory disturbances that occur during the onset of a migraine. The study examined adults ages 45+ over the course of six years of follow-up. Researchers recently reported and published the findings in Neurology Open Access, an official, peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Among 1,130 migraineurs, 5% with aura had a stroke versus 3% with aura-free migraine. Men under 72 with any migraine had an unexpected more than 3.5-fold higher stroke risk.
