Eyecare professionalsat independent locations say 41.2 percent oftheir progressive lens sales fall in the $250+ price range, according to the Jobson Research’s 2010 Wholesale Lab Usage Study, which can be purchased here. Another 35.6 percent of progressive lenses are priced in the $200-$250range, while 19.1 percent cost $150-$200. An additional 4.1 percent of progressive lens prices are under $150.

People who have problems with their eyesightoftendon’t visit eye doctors because of the cost or because they don’t have health insurance that covers eyecare, a Centers for Disease Control (CDC)survey shows, according to WebMD Health News.The survey shows that others don’t get regular eye exams because they don’t think they have eye problems, or for other reasons, such as having to travel too far to see doctors or specialists or having no transportation to get to their offices. In a study of 11,503 adults aged 40 and over who were considered to have moderate-to-severe visual impairment, 39.8 percentsaid they skipped seeking care in the past year because of costs or lack of insurance. Almost 35 percentsaid they didn’t seek eyesight care because they felt they didn’t need it, while 4.5 percentsaid they could not get an appointment. >>READ Full CDC Report>>

Recession Slows Migration within U.S.

Domestic migration last year reached its lowest level since the government began tracking it in the 1940s, the U.S. Census Bureau said, as the lingering effects of the recession continued to curb Americans’ mobility, the New York Times reported.About 10.5 million Americans changed counties from 2009 to 2010, or about 3.5 percent of the population, the lowest percentage since 1947, when the government first started tracking the numbers, according to Census data released this week. It was fewer than the 11 million who moved the previous year, and down by a third from the 15.8 million who moved from 2004 to 2005, when the economy was doing well. >>Read NY Times article>>

Patients More Comfortable with Doctors Who Use EHRs

Patients feel more comfortable with physicians who use anelectronic health recordsystem,but they believe that the information contained in the medical record is more accurate when they physically see the information being entered electronically, according to a recent Sage Healthcare Insights survey. About 42 percent ofphysicians use an EHR system to document patient care, and about one-third use EHR during patient encounters. Some 62 percentof physicians and 81 percentof patients have positive perceptions of documenting patient care electronically.Forty-five percentof patients had a “very positive” perception of their physicians or clinicians documenting patient care with a computer or other electronic device. The majority of survey respondents agreed with the statement that EHR systems will help improve the quality of healthcare (78 percentof patients, 62 percentof physicians). >>Read full report>>
