New downloadable forms designed to help patients and eye care professionals share critical health and vision information

April 3, 2026

Latinos en Optometry has introduced two new bilingual communication tools designed to help strengthen conversations between patients and eye care professionals. The downloadable forms—available in English and Spanish—are intended to help patients organize important health and vision information while allowing providers to better understand communication preferences and potential risk factors for eye disease.

Eye health disparities remain a significant concern in Hispanic/Latino communities. According to the National Eye Institute, Latino populations experience some of the highest rates of vision impairment from conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, and many individuals may be unaware they have eye disease.

BREAKING THROUGH COMMUNICATION BARRIERS

Communication barriers can further complicate interactions within the health-care system. A recent Pew Research Center analysis found that 44% of Hispanic adults say language or cultural differences contribute to poorer health outcomes, while nearly half report having a close friend or family member who needs a Spanish-speaking health care provider or translator. Research has also shown that patients often experience better outcomes when providers can communicate in their preferred language and understand the cultural experiences of the communities they serve.

“Clear communication is fundamental to good eye care,” said Diana Canto-Sims, OD, co-founder and board member of Latinos en Optometry. “When patients feel comfortable sharing their health history, family background, and vision concerns, providers are better equipped to identify risks and deliver appropriate care. These bilingual tools are designed to make that conversation easier for both patients and eye care professionals. Latinos en Optometry also provides additional guidance for practitioners on the importance of language and communication in eye care.

Developed in a bilingual, side-by-side format, the tools reflect Latinos en Optometry’s commitment to supporting culturally responsive care and helping eye care professionals better serve increasingly diverse patient populations.
