How to Use Digital Displays in Presenting Dry Eye

June 20, 2018

Kambiz Silani, OD, director of Beverly Hills Optometry in Los Angeles, uses a detailed digital display in his dry eye patient presentations, and finds increased patient engagement and compliance as a result. He uses simple analogies to dental health in illustrating a patient’s stage of dry eye symptoms, and he follows that with a conversation to identify the cause of their pain points. This pairing of highly detailed digital diagnostics and presentation with personalized inquiry, he says, provides “a targeted treatment that gives my patients the most relief.”

ENHANCE DETECTION. Some 50 percent of the population has meibomium gland dysfunction, making it one of the most under-diagnosed eye conditions.

EDUCATE. Use instrumentation to show patients photos of their eyes, pointing out the signs of gland dysfunction and dryness.

CUSTOMIZE TREATMENT. Have in-depth conversations with patients to pinpoint specific causes of the dryness, and then develop a treatment plan, also showing patients changes they can make in their own habits to lessen dryness.
