New ECP Income Study Results: How Does Your Income Compare to Other ODs?

New ECP income report available

Jobson Optical Research has released the 2025 Income Study. The report is based on income earned in 2024, and breaks the information down demographically and across practice settings.

The average income for all optometrists was $177,330. There still is an income gap for men versus women optometrists, with the average income for female optometrists at $163,255 and $190,167 for men.

ECP Income According to Family Circumstance

The report further breaks down the information into income for optometrists based on their family circumstances, showing the differences between single and married ODs and those with and without children.

Impact on Salary of Number of Years Working

In addition, the report gives a sense of how an OD’s income is impacted by the number of years they have been working.

How Are Independents Doing?

On practice setting, there was good news for independent optometry, with a higher average income, at $179,028 reported for independent optometrists versus those in employed settings.

The report goes a step further and looks at how independent practices vary in OD income according to the type of office, including differences across ODs working in optical shops, OD-owned practices and ophthalmology practices.
