Topcon Healthcare Inc. has acquired Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems (IRIS), a U.S.-based provider of cloud-based retinal screening technology.

Topcon says this acquisition advances its reach into primary care and “reinforces its commitment to early disease detection through data-driven connected care.”

IRIS Brings Retinal Screenings to Primary Care

IRIS delivers retinal screening tools into routine clinical settings, so that primary care physicians, Federally Qualified Health Centers and health systems can identify undiagnosed retinal disease as part of standard preventive care.

Its platform integrates with electronic medical records, incorporates AI-assisted diagnostics and features broad camera compatibility, enabling providers to screen for diabetic retinopathy and other conditions efficiently and at scale.

Strengthening Care Coordination Across Providers

Topcon points out that integrating IRIS into its Healthcare from the Eye initiative enables greater care coordination between primary care providers and eye care providers.

The acquisition supports a connected care model that identifies patients at risk for eye diseases earlier in primary care and refers them to eye care providers for timely diagnosis and treatment, Topcon says.

Eye care providers using AI-analyzed ocular data to detect signs of systemic or neurological disease can refer patients back to primary care for further evaluation, creating a feedback loop that closes care gaps and improves outcomes.

“This acquisition reflects our long-term strategy to connect the continuum of care through intelligent platforms that bring together data, workflow and real-time decision support,” said Jacques Gilbert, chief strategy and business development officer at Topcon Healthcare Inc.

Harmony Platform Expands with IRIS Integration

Topcon says the IRIS platform will enhance Harmony, its cloud-based connected care platform that unifies imaging, clinical insights and AI analytics across care settings. Adding IRIS’s referral and communication capabilities will provide a more robust infrastructure for shared clinical decision-making, improved compliance and reduced patient leakage across the healthcare continuum.

“IRIS enables us to expand the reach of the Healthcare from the Eye initiative into primary care, strengthening coordination between PCPs and ECPs and ensuring patients receive timely targeted care,” Gilbert said.

Focus on Impact and Expansion

Steven Martin, CEO at IRIS, emphasized the opportunity to scale with Topcon Healthcare. “With Topcon Healthcare’s investment in connected care infrastructure, we’re well-positioned to expand our impact. Together, we’ll ensure providers of all sizes can confidently deliver preventive screenings that improve outcomes and reduce disparities,” Martin said.

IRIS Track Record and Future Developments

Topcon shares that since 2012, IRIS has enabled more than 1.8 million screenings, identified over 279,000 cases of diabetic retinopathy and supported more than 650 healthcare organizations in improving quality scores and addressing care gaps. The IRIS team will continue operating from its headquarters in Pensacola, Florida, as an affiliate of Topcon Healthcare.

Topcon Healthcare plans to incorporate diagnostic modules for cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and early Alzheimer’s detection into its expanding platform. Topcon notes: “Integrating IRIS will further elevate the clinical value of ocular data and extend the Healthcare from the Eye vision to more providers and patients across the continuum of care.”
