Change patients’ lives with clinically validated migraine lenses

I immediately thought of my aunt when I first heard about the science behind migraines and Avulux technology at a CE session several years ago. She had been a chronic migraine sufferer for years, and it had a daily impact on her life. I thought Avulux Migraine & Light Sensitivity Lenses could be perfect for her as I listened to the presenter explain his research.
From my aunt’s experiences and observing others, I’ve known that migraine sufferers often find relief in going to a dark room and shutting their eyes. It’s almost a forced reset of their visual system. This CE presentation connected all the dots in explaining why doing this can be helpful—up to 60% of migraine attacks are triggered by light. Avulux’s patented precision lens technology filters the harmful, migraine-triggering lights in the blue, amber and red light spectrum, while simultaneously allowing in more of the green light that has been demonstrated to have a soothing effect on migraine sufferers.
The technology wasn’t yet available on the market, but I was already fascinated. I knew my aunt was not alone in her suffering. There was great potential in having this technology in my office.
STAFF MEMBER EXPERIENCES MIGRAINE RELIEF
When I brought in Avulux lenses to my office nearly a year ago, my receptionist and pretester was my first candidate before I could get my aunt into the office.
My staff member often missed several days of work per month due to her migraines. We fit her with the lenses, and I told her to wear them whenever she felt like she was getting a migraine.
Then, she started wearing them all the time. I asked her why. She told me she had been living with a background headache 24/7, and she never knew anything different. But when she started wearing the glasses, that went away. And she didn’t miss a day of work again!
In this case, the impact of Avulux was more than eliminating migraines. I saw this staff member’s personality change. She was happier, blossoming with confidence. She decided to go back to school to earn her computer degree. Now she has two pairs of glasses with Avulux lenses and wears them every day.
TWO QUESTIONS TO ASK EVERY PATIENT
You probably have many patients like my staff member or my aunt in your practice already. That’s why I ask every patient about migraines. First, “do you get migraines?” Some of them suffer from chronic migraines, with symptoms every day. Others are less frequent, but still experience discomfort. If they say yes, I will introduce Avulux technology to them.
If they say no, I add, “That’s great. Do you know someone who does?”
I’ve been blown away by the response of how many people get migraines. I don’t get a yes just occasionally—it happens often. Almost 15% of people in the US suffer from chronic migraines according to the NIH—that’s many times more than people who have glaucoma.
The problem for migraine sufferers is the sheer prevalence of companies that are touting a cure for migraines; but unfortunately a “cure” simply does not exist. The medications that patients become so reliant on aren’t actually fixing the issue, just treating the symptoms.
EDUCATION IS KEY
That’s why it’s important to kick the migraine before it even starts with a preventative measure. Avulux Migraine & Light Sensitivity Lenses are a great match here.
Take time to educate patients. If you don’t explain the how and why behind this scientifically-proven technology, they will lump this technology in with other solutions that they have undoubtedly tried without much success.
Show them the samples, and allow them to try them on. Then use the other tools in your toolbox to further the conversation. I reference OCT pictures from our retinal cameras when I talk about Avulux lenses. I explain to them how it works with the OCT photo pulled up, and I think that helps get the message through.
The details are important, especially in cases where parents may be taking information back for a child. It will help them feel confident in passing on that recommendation.
If there is any hesitation about the price, I remind patients that this is often a cheaper option than medications they’ve tried in the past. We offer a 100% guarantee to bring back their glasses if they aren’t satisfied. That helps with the buy in, but not one patient has brought them back in the past year.
Not all patients opt in right away, but many will ultimately return. We’ve had patients come back and decide to give it a try.
CHANGING LIVES WITH CLINICALLY PROVEN TECHNOLOGY
I’ve heard so many wonderful success stories. My aunt is one of them, and she was full of positive feedback. So was my uncle, her husband—he couldn’t believe the difference these lenses had made in her happiness, and his, by extension!
One patient drove hours from Idaho to our practice after finding us on the Avulux doctor locator. He frequently had such terrible migraines that they would make him physically sick to his stomach. He called us after a month with his new glasses to say he had never gone this long feeling this great. Ten months later, he was still experiencing that same level of impact.
Another gentleman and his wife told me they had driven 100 miles on a vacation road trip only to realize that his wife left his glasses with Avulux lenses at home. She found the technology so valuable that she made him turn the car around to retrieve them before continuing the trip.
WHY NOT HELP YOUR PATIENTS?
The population suffering from migraines is huge. This is an awesome opportunity to help your existing patients and potential patients in your community. So why aren’t more of us doing it? Our jobs are to make people’s lives better.
For this reason, I feel a deep need to carry Avulux technology in my practice. Yes, it’s profitable, but I didn’t add it to our portfolio as a revenue source. My motivation is to provide a life-changing experience. The joy that it brings is the top priority. Any money we make is a bonus.
I look forward to spreading the word in our community through connecting with local neurologists. I can make this recommendation with great confidence, thanks to Avulux. The Avulux team has been responsive to the needs of my practice, while continuing to evolve and develop even better resources for providers. It’s a whole new avenue to explore with a segment of your patient base that will be so grateful that you did.
