Bridging the Gap Between Clinical & Business Mindsets

Oct. 2, 2019

Can a clinically trained OD think like a business person? Can these two mindsets be bridged? Here is an in-depth discussion to get to the bottom of that question with  thought leaders Penn Moody, OD, and Michael Kling, OD, moderated by ROB Professional Editor Mark Wright, OD, FCOVD.

Offer Patients Options to Improve Quality of Life
Step Up and Be Leader

TWO DISTINCT WAYS OF THINKING. The business mindset is geared toward trial and error to see what works; the clinical mindset needs to simply get it right–and avoid risk–to minimize bad treatment outcomes.

TALK BENEFITS. To be the best doctor, focus on what you can recommend, regardless of cost, to most improve the patient’s life, and then let the patient decide whether they want to follow your recommendations.

DON’T PROJECT YOUR OWN OUTLOOK. Don’t let your own financial concerns impact the recommendations you give to the patient. Let the patient have the full range of options, rather than telling them what they can and can’t afford.

USE PERSONALITY ASSESSMENTS. Personality assessments like DiSc can give insights on where on the spectrum of clinical to business mindset doctors and support staff fall.

ACKNOWLEDGE COMMUNICATION DIFFERENCES. You and each of your staff members may have a different way of communicating, and each patient may be different, too. Learn how to accommodate each patient’s preferred way of communicating.

FOCUS ON STRENGTHS. Rather than trying to fix your weaknesses, get someone else to do what you’re weak at, so you can focus on optimizing your strengths.
