Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has relaunched its Spectacles glasses with two new models, according to reporting from the New York Post.
The initial model of Spectacles was not a success, resulting in $40 million in losses, the company said, but the new versions of the glasses will be slightly different.
The new Spectacles are said to be similar in design to Snapchat’s current offering, but will have a single camera, rather than two, and will offer better water resistance, according to the tech news site Cheddar, which the Post says first reported on the new glasses. The new Spectacles are said to also include aluminum frames and a built-in GPS.
The most premium model might cost as much as $300.
“For now, Spectacles can only record video clips and send them to the Snapchat app. While the planned third generation of the glasses will allow for more immersive, 3D-like video by adding a second camera to the frame, technological hurdles will likely keep Snap from adding true AR capabilities for the next couple years. A Snapchat patent filed in 2015 details how the company could use eyewear with two cameras to learn the user’s position and show virtual objects onto the real world,” Cheddar reports.
