The Optometric Minute

Practices of Distinction: Six Attributes

April Jasper, OD, FAAO, and Katie Gilbert-Spear, OD, MPH, outline the six attributes of an optometric practice that goes beyond being excellent–to being truly distinctive. Such a practice must deliver distinction in vision, atmosphere, service, efficiency, accuracy and empathy. (Part one of a two-part series.)

A practice vision provides a sense of where a practice is headed–so the entire staff can measure its progress toward its goals.

The atmosphere of your reception area, exam rooms and optical dispensary communicates what your practice is about. An atmosphere should welcome the patient and make them feel at home and well cared for.

Practice distinction requires a “Wow!” level of service. Let patients know that providing great service is absolutely vital in your practice. Patients respond well when you fully describe the services you provide, respond promptly to their feedback (both positive and negative), and have your entire team on board with providing a great patient experience.
