New Patient Educational Resource: Guide to Choosing the Right Eye Drop

Dec. 20, 2017

To assist ECPs and other health care professionals in helping consumers better understand when and how to properly use OTC eye drops, The Mentholatum Company, distributors of ROHTO DRY-AIDTM, in conjunction with the Intrepid Eye Society and CEDARS/ASPENS, a not-for-profit society of anterior segment surgeon educators, has developed a new educational resource, “Before You Buy Eye Drops: What You Need to Know.”

Today, there are many safe and effective over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops available to relieve various types of eye discomfort, such as dry eyes, red eyes, eyes irritated by allergies or contact lens wear, and more. With so many choices, consumers are often overwhelmed and confused about which products to use to treat their symptoms.

Before You Buy Eye Drops: What You Need to Know offers important information about different types of eye drops and what they are most commonly used for, helpful “Do’s and Don’ts” to follow when using eye drops, step-by-step instructions on how to properly instill eye drops, and links to additional eye health information resources.

“Many eye-related complaints have symptoms that may look and feel similar to other conditions,” says Cathleen McCabe, MD. “Patients don’t realize that using a drop that was not designed for their condition may make their symptoms worse or even create a more serious eye problem.”

“That is why it is so important that we educate consumers that all eye drops are not alike and encourage them to have an Eye Care Professional (ECP) evaluate their symptoms so that we can recommend the appropriate treatment,” adds Justin Schweitzer, OD, FAAO, president of the Intrepid Eye Society, a diverse group of emerging thought leaders in optometry.

Copies of “Before You Buy Eye Drops: What You Need to Know” can be downloaded from the Resources section at the ROHTO DRY-AIDTM Professional web site.
