MBA Seminar in Myrtle Beach Focuses on Optometric Practice Growth

Eighty optometrists and office managers gathered in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on June 7 to hear practice-building pearls from the faculty of the Management & Business Academy  (MBA), sponsored by Alcon and Essilor. The seminar was held in conjunction with the 2012 Annual Spring Education Conference of the North Carolina State Optometric Society.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer the acclaimed MBA program to our membership,” says NCSOS trustee Dr. Jamie J. Casper, in greeting participants at the all-day meeting.

Mark Wright, OD, FCOVD, presented “Essentials of Financial Management,” in which he stressed the importance of setting financial goals and then implementing practical strategies for improvements in revenues and profitability. He demonstrated ways to benchmark practice performance against national norms that are included in the MBA’s Key Metrics: Assessing Optometric Practice Performance. Dr. Wright also conducted implementation exercises in which groups shared best practice growth ideas, to be posted on the MBA website, www.MBA-ce.com.

Neil Gailmard, OD, MBA, FAAO, presented “Essentials of Patient Experience Engineering.” Dr. Gailmard shared practical examples of how the deliverance of world class customer (or patient) service is vital to building a successful optometric practice. He outlined how to analyze time usage and how to delegate tasks and schedule appointments to realize optimal efficiency and deliver superior patient care. Also discussed was the use of social media in reaching and communicating with a growing patient base.

In conjunction with the seminar, participants completed an online financial questionnaire that generated a custom MBA Practice Performance Assessment. This 60-page report evaluates the performance of a practice in multiple areas. The report then provides a percentile ranking in those areas versus national norms derived from more than 1,700 optometric practices that have contributed information to the MBA data base.
