The Optometric Minute

Make Time and Space for the Medical Model

Nov. 1, 2017

Brigitte Shen Lee, OD, is ramping up the medical aspects of her practice, both in services provided and time and space allocated. If you’re serious about capturing new opportunities in dry eye and other conditions, here is the game plan to make sure you can deliver.

RAMP UP INCREMENTALLY. First year, add a dry eye diagnostic test and treatment like LipiView and LipiFlow. Second year, address another medical eyecare-related challenge.

EDUCATE. Explain to patients why it’s important to address conditions like dry eye and meibomium gland dysfunction, and why it’s important for them to return to the office for a separate, more in-depth exam to address those issues. Let patients know that you treat conditions like dry eye, digital eye strain and red eye.

ADDRESS EPIDEMICS. Dry eye and digital eye strain, along with diseases that cause preventable blindness, like glaucoma and macular degeneration, are global epidemics. Explain to patients why you need to screen for them each year. Again, let patients know that your practice specializes in helping to manage those diseases.
