Luxottica Announces New Optometry Scholarship Program

July 5, 2017

Luxottica Retail North America announced the launch of the new Luxottica Eye Care Optometry Scholarship program in support of eligible students of optometry in the U.S.

There will be 20 scholarships awarded in the amount of $5,000 each. The program, with contributions totaling $100,000, will award the students’ performance and accomplishments in the areas of leadership, community, service and extracurricular activities, the company said.

“Throughout the last year, Luxottica has been listening intently to optometry students to understand how we can better support their personal and professional aspirations,” says Jason Singh, OD, chief medical officer for Luxottica Retail North America.

“Part of their request was for the company to help offset the increasing costs associated with school, as the average optometric student graduates with $150,000 to $200,000 of debt. In addition to scholarships, students asked for opportunities to participate in social impact projects like OneSight,” says Dr. Singh. “The recent Luxottica-AOSA-OneSight trip to Tanzania was a huge success, and we want the scholarship program to represent yet another example of how we deliver on our commitments.”

Andy Mackner, president of the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) adds, “The AOSA is committed to finding opportunities that will help our members be successful. We are grateful for the receptiveness of Luxottica to the needs of the students and the partnership that has developed over the last year. We recognize the burden of student loans, and are excited to have this program to help assist some of our members.”
