The Optometric Minute

Listen to Patient’s Chief Complaint…and Solve It

Eric M. White, OD, of Complete Family Vision Care, in San Diego, Calif., advises ODs always to listen well to a patient’s chief complaint–and solve that problem. Do so by prescribing specific eyewear in spectacles lenses and treatments or contact lenses. When you make it clear to the patient that you want them to have the best optical products, you increase the likelihood they will purchase them.

ACTION POINTS

LISTEN WELL. Hear the patient’s chief complaint and solve it.
BE THE PRESCRIBING DR. Prescribe specific products in lenses and contact lenses that perform the best. New technology provides great opportunities to improve a patient’s vision.
HAND OFF WELL. Have a good handoff to your optician, and emphasize to your patient that you want them to have the best.
