Eye2 Zone: Trying Out Google Glass, Showcasing Electronic Eyewear

Jobson Editor Andrew Karp highlights a host of innovations in electronic eyewear displayed at the Eye2 Zone at Vision Expo East.  Kevin Wheat, OD, discusses the present uses and future potential of Google Glass, and he provides an informative orientation session to first-time Glass wearer Margery Weinstein, ROB Managing Editor. John Bonizio, owner of Metro Optics, explains why he enthusiastically showcases electronic eyewear in his four optical stores in New York City.

John Bonizio, owner of Metro Optics, which has four optical stores in New York City, is showcasing electronic eyewear in his stores, lest these new high-tech devices be available only in consumer electronics stores. “We’re the eyecare and eyewear professionals,” says Bonizio, “and it is our responsibility to bring these products to the consumer.”

Kevin Wheat, OD, of Denver, Colo., believes that Google Glass has a place in the optometric office today–and an even brighter future there once a number of apps and features have been developed. Medical applications for Google Glass are among areas being developed.

Kevin Wheat, OD, provides a Google Glass orientation session to Margery Weinstein, Managing Editor of Review of Optometric Business. First-time Glass wearers often are surprised to find that the device does not invade the central visual zone; rather, wearers gaze upward to gain information or interact. Through a series of taps and vocal commands, the Glass wearer can summon a series of menus that provide a host of options to gain information, record photos and interact through social media. And every new wearer wants a selfie!
